The code of ethics is the identity of the profession. Five principles bind every HPI member:
- Honest information — presenting facts about destinations, history and culture accurately.
- Respect for local customs and beliefs — ensuring travelers understand local norms.
- Traveler safety — recognizing risks and applying safety procedures.
- Transparency — no steering travelers for personal gain without disclosure.
- Professionalism — punctuality, appearance, communication and subject mastery.
Violations are handled by the honor council with escalating sanctions up to membership revocation.
